Located at the north eastern fringe of Rajasthan, Bharatpur is often referred to as the `Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan. It is 180 km from Delhi, 55 km from Agra and 35 km from Mathura. It is famous for its world renowned bird park, now renamed Keoladeo National Park. But like many other cities in Rajasthan, Bharatpur has had an interesting history and its historic palace and fort are a testimony to its past. Although the royal house here traces its lineage back to the 11th century, modern Bharatpur owes its existence to Maharaja Suraj Mal, who founded the city after establishing a state in the Mewar region, south of Delhi, in the 18h century. He built its fort as well as the stunning palace. He was also primarily responsible for creating the famous bird park, when he built the Ajan Bund at the confluence of the Gambhir and Banganga rivers, which resulted in the birds first arriving here. It serves as home to over 370 species of birds and offers protection to various indigenous species of fauna and flora. Declared a protected sanctuary in 1971, some of the species of birds that are seen here are warbler, babbler, grey hornbill, osprey, peregrine, spotted eagle and crested serpent eagle.Besides its own native population of birds, this UNESCO Heritage Site is an important wintering area for more than 300 species of aquatic birds that fly in from Turkmenistan, China and Afghanistan.
